Plastic Surgery

Dr. Donald Lalonde, Clinical Head

Dr. Jim O'Brien, Director of Residency Training

The Department of Plastic Surgery of the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation offers an extensive ambulatory and inpatient experience for both undergraduate and graduate medical students. The department functions on a multi-disciplinary basis, running an active 6-bed inpatient unit, with extensive experience to burn, micro-surgical and general plastic surgery procedures. The 3 attending staff provide 6 ambulatory clinics per week: 3 at St. Joseph's Hospital, 3 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, as well as monthly clinics in Charlotte County and Sussex. At the completion of the rotation, the elective student should be competent in understanding minor plastic surgery procedures, have a general understanding of major plastic surgery principles and know how to suture, dress wounds, and handle common hand injuries. There is an active teaching program with plastic surgery rounds every Wednesday morning and teaching seminars by video-conference with Halifax on Thursday evenings.
