Geriatric Medicine

Dr. Pamela Jarrett, Clinical Head
Dr. Elizabeth MacDonald, Director of Residency Training

This rotation will provide the resident with a broad practical experience dealing with elderly patients and will include experience in both in-patient and out-patient settings. There will be an opportunity to rotate through the Geriatric Evaluation Management Unit (GEM) and Inpatient Consultation and participate in outpatient clinics. Other experiences may include home visits, nursing home visits and assessment of inpatients on the Geriatric Restorative Care Unit ( GRU) and the Cognitive Assessment and Management
Unit (CAM). This will provide the resident with an experience in the interdisciplinary care
of elderly patients with multiple problems, as well as rehabilitation needs. You will acquire assessment and management skills as they relate to comprehensive geriatric assessment, managing medications in the elderly and rehabilitation of the elderly patient.

A rotation in Geriatric Medicine will provide an excellent opportunity for any resident to work
with evaluation and management of elderly individuals in conjunction with Geriatricians,
Family Physicians, allied Health professionals and other residents. This one month elective is offered to medical students and residents in Family Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery
